1. What are the different types of houseboats?

There are mainly three types of houseboats in Alleppey, they are Deluxe, Premium, and Luxury houseboats. Luxury houseboats are superior to deluxe and premium. Even there are some houseboats with super luxury facilities like luxury interiors and furnishings and some with Jacuzzi facilities. Mostly the houseboat with Jacuzzi is a one-bedroom houseboat mainly for honeymoon couples looking for a luxury floating. Premium houseboats are just below the luxury houseboat.

The difference between deluxe and premium houseboats are A/C timings and a few differences in the food menu. Also, the most premium houseboats are with glass-covered A/C dining cum living area where the A/C can use for the full time while on the deluxe houseboat is A/C is limited from 09:00 AM to 06:00 AM only in the bedroom.

The most booked houseboats in Alleppey are deluxe category as it is economical for most of the common people with decent facilities.

2. What type of houseboat cruises are available?

 

There are mainly 2 types of houseboat cruises available.

1. 1. Overnight Cruise
   2. Day Cruise
   3. Night stay

 

• For Overnight Cruise

Check-in time: 11:30 AM

Houseboat cruise starts at 12 Noon, Cruise till 1:30 PM, Stops for lunch till 2:30 PM Start cruising till 5:30 PM – Stops for night stay till morning. Morning there will be a 1-hour cruise then check out.

Checkout time: 09:00 am (Next day)

This package includes a Welcome drink, Lunch, Evening Tea/Coffee and Snacks, Dinner, and second-day Breakfast.

Multiple nights packages are also available.

 

• For Day Cruise

 Check-in time for day cruise: 10:00 AM / 11:00 AM Checkout time for day cruise: 04:00 PM / 05:00 PM

In between, there will a 1-hour lunch break. On day cruise the Welcome drink, Lunch, Evening Tea/Coffee, and Snacks are included.

 

• Night stay

Check-in time: After 5:30 PM

This is not a recommended stay, but if guests are reaching late in Alleppey and the next day needs to leave early they can choose this stay. The cruise will be very limited to a maximum of 2 hours in this. The welcome drink, dinner, and breakfast will be served in it.

3. What is included in the Food menu?

The guest can enjoy the authentic Kerala cuisine during their houseboat trip. The Houseboat Food Menu is on a fixed menu. Pure vegetarian food, Jain food, Halal food, etc. can be placed in advance. Apart from the fixed menu guests can also place customized requests for cakes, candle-light dinner provisions, etc. Also, the guest has the option to buy Prawns, Crabs, other fish directly from the fishermen or the lakeside shop, and then the chef can cook it for you in the houseboat kitchen itself.

4. What are the amenities in a houseboat?

The 1-bedroom houseboat to 10-bedroom houseboats is available in Alappuzha. Each houseboat the bedroom with attached washrooms, a living area with dining, kitchen. Some houseboats with separate living areas and dining with glass-covered cabins, some with an upper deck. Three staff will be there the captain, oarsmen, and a chef. All food is prepared onboard.

5. Should I get a Houseboat directly without pre-booking?

 

Yes, you can get houseboats directly in Alleppey. But it is always advisable to pre-book the houseboat. Most of the time the houseboat has in high demand and good houseboats are always booked in advance. Sometimes it will be difficult to find a quality houseboat on the spot.

Some say, it will get the houseboat directly from the spot and can book with negotiating. Yes, that is correct. Always remember that the owners of most of the houseboats won’t be available in the spot, most of them are tout there. When you negotiate, they will adjust that difference in the quality of service and cruising. If in case you are facing any issues in the houseboat you do not have any proper contact to resolve that issues other than the crew members. The touts do not have any responsibilities after collecting the money from you. 

When you are pre-booking the houseboat through the owner’s website or with any reputed travel company you are always safe and secure and there will be always someone to support you to resolve any issues if faced inside the houseboat. 

On spot, you may get a houseboat for a cheaper rate, but there you may have to compromise in the quality of service, cruising, safety, etc.

8. Why the houseboat do not travel after 5:30 PM?

It is as per the government law. Since the fishermen set up nets in the lake government banned all kinds of engine-driven boats during this period. Also, it is very dangerous to cruise a houseboat at night. The Alleppey Backwater is interconnected with a lot of small canals. The people living around travel through these places in their small rowboats which is their travel medium. The visibility will be almost zero at night. The water transport department line boats have permission to operate through a particular route.
